Guggenheim Museum

Museums can be the highlight of any vacation. They’re monuments for art and culture, and they’re full of surprises. Most major cities worldwide will at least have small museums and we highly recommend checking out whatever museums are around your chosen destination. But there are some museums that are as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. Here are some of the most beautiful museums in the world.

The Guggenheim Museum; Bilbao, Spain

The Guggenheim is a world-famous museum for a lot of reasons. It contains one of the largest collections of modern and contemporary art in Spain, but it’s also one of the most breathtaking buildings designed by famous architect Frank Gehry. The sleek, angular design on the outside is crowned by an incredible floral skylight, making the building itself worth the price of admission.

The State Hermitage Museum; St. Petersburg, Russia

The State Hermitage Museum is one of the oldest and largest museums in the world, containing nearly 2.7 million individual works. Art lovers delight in its collection, but its architecture is also absolutely magnificent. The Baroque-style palace is brimming with luxury and detail, all accented in gold and green.

Potala Palace; Lhasa, Tibet

This massive structure was once home to the Dalai Lama, but it’s now a breathtaking museum filled with murals, tombs of past Dalai Lamas, and other rich sources of Tibetan culture. The museum was built in the 17th century and is an architectural marvel. It’s 13 stories high and has more than 1000 rooms. You do have to climb up almost 12,000 feet to see it, but we promise that it’s worth it.

Vatican Museums; Italy

It’s really no surprise that the heart of the Catholic church also contains some of the most incredible and iconic artworks ever created. The Vatican Museums encompass sites such as the Sistine Chapel containing Michelangelo’s masterpiece ceiling and many of Raphael’s frescoes. It’s no surprise that they welcome almost five million tourists every year; some of the world’s wonders can be found in this collection of museums.
